Visit with Donald Rumsfeld

|
Donald Rumsfeld 2 Donald Rumsfeld 1
Yesterday we had a guest appearance by none other than The Secretary of Defense himself. Donald Rumsfeld spoke to us from a hanger packed with about 2300 troops from all different units. I personally thought he gave a great speech. It was motivational without being cheesy propaganda. He spoke for about 10 minutes, then opened up the floor for questions.

The big question was the first one, which asked about the lack of armor for our vehicles (you can read about that one below). All the news sites seem to be reporting this as a 'disgruntled troops strike back' story, but I did not leave the hanger with that impression. I did not feel the troops were pissed or that there was a huge Army-wide morale issue, like some of the papers are reporting. I thought it was a good speach and some soldiers raised some valid concerns, but on a whole everything went well.

Here's a quote from today's Boston Globe article titled:
'Soldiers headed to Iraq grill Rumsfeld'
In one particularly pointed exchange, Army Specialist Thomas Wilson of the Tennessee Army National Guard demanded to know why his units' Humvees do not have adequate armor.

''We're digging pieces of rusted scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass that's already been shot up, dropped, busted, picking the best out of this scrap to put on our vehicles to take into combat," Wilson said, drawing applause and shouts of approval from his fellow soldiers. ''Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles?"

Rumsfeld responded that the lack of armor is a ''matter of physics," explaining that armored Humvees are being produced as fast as they can. ''It's a matter of production and capability of doing it," he said.

There was a good comment that I have not seen mentioned in any of the news reports. Regarding the up-armored HMMWVs, Rumsfeld mentioned that last week when there was a threat at the White House(may have been the capital), six up-armored HMMWVs pulled up with the response team. Rumsfeld said he noticed the HMMWVs when he looked out the window. The HMMWVs are no longer in the states...

60 Min

They had this story on 60 Minutes about the lack of armor a few weeks back, and one of the reasons for it was budget constraints not physics is what they reported. Thanks to 60 Minutes and the national viewing I am sure Mr Rumsfeld received many letters from concerned parents, all we can hope is he is doing something about it now. Thank you for keeping us updated with this story.

Polisky

Hi Kobus, I just wanted to let you know that John and the others made it to their destination in Iraq safely on Sunday the 5th. He has forwarded several pictures that he took from his convoy if you are interested, please let me know. robin@richdairy.com I look at you site daily even though John is no longer with you. Thank you. Take care.

The conservative talk show ho

The conservative talk show hosts are all over this story. Their big attack is that the reporter basically made the soldier ask the question to "create" a news story that didn't actually exist. Do you guys really have to search through scrap metal to armor your vehicles? If so, the DOD needs to step it up... Good job soldiers, keep it up.

Scrap Metal

If that soldier did not ask the question, another soldier would have. I don't know anything about the reporter asking the soldier to ask that specific question, but I do know that after he asked the question, I said to myself, "wow, he worded that really well".

CNN

CNN) -- The question a U.S. soldier asked Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld Wednesday about the lack of armor on some combat vehicles in Iraq was planted by a newspaper reporter embedded with the soldier's unit, the reporter told colleagues in an e-mail.

Irreleant, in my opinion, who came up with the question

Seems to me all that really matters is: was it a valid question (seems that it was, and that frightens me and angers me); was it a decent answer (hell no). I'm glad it was asked, because I have heard that there were issues, but did not know what to believe. Now, after hearing the applause the question generated, I think I know what to believe: that the troops wanted that question asked, and they want an answer. I do too. » login to post comments

THIS STORY IS ALL OVER THE NE

THIS STORY IS ALL OVER THE NEWS AND EVERYTHING!!

Better Dead Than Red

My professional intel analysis says, this whole thing was staged. I personally think Rumsfeld is pissed at George Bush and the Republican party for something, so staged this whole event. The dead giveaway is the 'blue' tie... Or was he just giving props to us Massachusetts folks? (This is not a serious comment)

staged

You are absoulutly correct. This is the only way DoD can get any money from the defense budget. We have already gone over the budget by 650 million dollars. DLA is working with DIA in trying to understand what is needed and how to get the proper funds. The aquisition management department is always thinking of ways to help the soldiers in the field. We also are working with the TACOM procurement network to make sure the armour is suitable. THANKS GUYS.....Smflzn@aol.com
